The workshop is designed to provide participants with the theoretical insights, practical skills, and an increased self-awareness to improve the therapeutic relationship and support the healing process of their clients viewed through the lens of the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM).

We will explore the internal and relational dynamics, both normal and unavoidable, that emerge when clients or therapists become anxious and resort to adaptive early life strategies to cope during the therapeutic process. This addresses the various challenges of how we relate to our physical, mental, and emotional states when being affected by disorganized clients and/or experiencing the effects of projection and transference. We will identify feelings and behaviors in clients and ourselves that may indicate the presence of projective processes and defenses against unpleasant experiences during sessions.

This training will support participants to gain more insights about the various dynamics involved and improve their skills and abilities through lectures, demonstrations, self-experiential exercises, supervision, and practice sessions.

Topics include:

• Orientation to and dynamics in the relational (intersubjective) matrix during therapy
• Developing a collaborative therapeutic alliance
• Typical countertransference reactions and their impact on the therapeutic process
• Awareness of countertransference reactions vs. countertransference acting out
• Therapeutic narcissism – objectifying ourselves and our clients
• NARM Survival Styles and countertransference tendencies
• Agency, clarity and the freedom to choose a response
